French police weapons under scrutiny after gilets jaunes injuries

Government facing calls to ban riot police’s use of explosives

The French government is under growing pressure to review police use of explosive weapons against civilians after serious injuries were reported during gilets jaunes street demonstrations, including people alleged to have lost eyes and to have had their hands and feet mutilated.

France’s legal advisory body, the council of state, will on Wednesday examine an urgent request by the French Human Rights League and the CGT trade union to ban police from using a form of rubber-bullet launcher in which ball-shaped projectiles are shot out of specialised handheld launchers. France’s rights ombudsman has long warned they are dangerous and carry “disproportionate risk”.

French sailor, 73, wins round-the-world solo-race without modern instruments

  • Golden Globe race involves navigation with sextants and paper maps

A 73-year-old French sailor has won an unusual, around-the-world yacht race after 212 days alone at sea without modern instruments, in what was his first sailing victory.

Jean-Luc Van Den Heede arrived on Tuesday in Les Sables d’Olonne in western France in his 35-foot yacht Matmut, the first boat to finish the 30,000-mile Golden Globe race. Of the 19 sailors who started out last July, only five were still in the race on Tuesday.

France and Italy's war of words steps up as elections approach

The diplomatic spat between Paris and Rome is only likely to worsen before the late May poll

The French president, Emmanuel Macron, may have brushed off the recent spate of verbal attacks by Italy’s two deputy prime ministers, Luigi Di Maio and Matteo Salvini, but analysts predict relations between the two countries will deteriorate further in the run-up to the European elections in late May.

Salvini, who heads the far-right League, said Macron was a “terrible” French president and urged French voters not to back his En Marche party in the European parliamentary ballot, while Di Maio, the leader of the anti-establishment Five Star Movement, last week accused France of impoverishing Africa and bringing on the migration crisis.

From Le Pen to Alice Weidel: how the European far-right set its sights on women

In far-right populist parties across the continent, a new generation of angry white women are rising to leadership roles. Why are they turning to groups that have traditionally opposed feminism?

It was a chastening lesson for any woman tempted to join the cut and thrust of rightwing populism. After Corinna Miazga was elected to the German parliament in 2017 for the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party, a male colleague suggested she would be better suited to being a pole dancer than an MP.

Miazga did not let it rest, getting her own back by telling a party conference of the lewd intervention by fellow MP Petr Bystron. “An ‘Argh’ went up in the audience,” she recalls. “No one could quite believe I’d dared to reveal this. Many people in the AfD were subsequently angry at me. They said: ‘We know you’re cross, but by bringing this into the public arena, you’ll encourage people to say we have a male-female problem in the party.’”

France’s gilets jaunes used to cause chaos. Right now they’re just chaotic | Pauline Bock

The anti-Macron protest movement is split over a decision to compete in elections. A battle for its soul is under way

The art of the street demo has a long and venerable tradition in France, but the era of the colour wars may be only just beginning. What started with guerrilla blockades of roundabouts by the gilets jaunes (yellow vests) in opposition to French president Emmanuel Macron’s new fuel tax has led to weekly marches in Paris and across France, some ending in violent stand-offs between protesters and the police. On Saturday, for “Act XI” (the rather portentous title given to the 11th protest) the yellow vests numbered 69,000 across France and 4,500 in Paris. Although down from the previous week, with 84,000 nationwide, the figures were higher than in December.

The political wing is viewed with contempt by the gilets jaunes radicals, who remain devotees of a more grassroots style

Kim Kardashian & Kanye West: Banned From The Voice Set!

John Legend joins The Voice for the sixteenth season as a coach AND he's already off to somewhat of a rocky start.

While Legend has been a guest and a mentor on the show multiple times, it's now his turn to decide who will be the perfect mentor for #TeamJL.

And his pick... Kanye West!

Kanye West and Kim Kardashian for Versace

I mean, it's not shocking that Legend would think of West.

They are pretty good pals, despite their political differences, and have been friends for years.

His friendship with West even helped land him a record deal with Columbia Records back in 2004.

John Legend and Kanye West

So, yeah, the two have some history.

But, we all know their wives, Kim Kardashian and Chrissy Teigen's friendship might be even closer...

The foursome is often spotted hanging out together and even went on a couple's vacation to San Francisco recently.

Kim Kardashian, Kanye West, John Legend Chrissy Teigen

Also, the fact that West and Legend have recorded together in the past makes him an eligible candidate.

However, according to Radar Online, when the three other returning coaches, which include Kelly Clarkson, Blake Shelton and Adam Levine heard about this they quickly shared their concerns with the "higher-ups" of the show.

An insider shared, "Kanye has just caused too many problems in his personal life and endeavors lately and they just feel that it would be best if him and Kim stayed away from the show for John's first season."

It's Your Call, But...

Guess that means Kim can't hang with bestie Chrissy backstage.

"John has been bringing Chrissy to set and everyone gets along with the both of them just fine. He has a big head and he is definitely trying to win, but they are all in it to win it," a source tells Radar.

"Everyone thinks he just needs to calm down and relax because he is getting himself all psyched out over this. It is really just the luck of the draw as to who hits the buzzer first for the person that is meant to win."

Adam and Blake on The Voice

Hmm, tell that to Adam and Blake who are constantly in a 'friendly' competition with one another throughout the whole show.

The singer told Hollywood Reporter that he is "thrilled to join the coaches of The Voice" and that he is excited to "discover talented singers and help them make the most of their gift."

And with or without the Wests, John will get to do just that.

The Voice premieres Monday, February 25, on NBC.

Brad Pitt Hasn't Seen His Kids in 900 Days, Source Claims

Move over, Tom Cruise!

There's a new Hollywood deadbeat dad in town, and he's not blaming his negligent ways on commands issued by his alien overlords.

Brad Pitt with a Question

According to Radar Online, Brad Pitt recently reached a painful milestone:

The site claims Brad has not been spotted in public with his kids in 900 days.

Now, that's not to say he hasn't seen any of his kids.

Brad Pitt = Handsome

In fact, he's probably spent time with all of them at one point or another over the course of the past two and a half years.

But it is to say there are some seriously high tensions, and Brad's relationship with his children is not what he would like it to be.

Allow us to explain:

Brad Pitt and Son Maddox Photo

As you may recall, Brad's contentious relationship with son Maddox, 17, was at the center of Pitt's divorce from Angelina Jolie.

Jolie decided that Maddox is old enough to decide for himself if he'd like to continue having a relationship with his father, and he chose not to.

Maddox's younger brother Pax, 15, has also opted out of spending any time with Brad.

Brad Pitt and Son Maddox Picture

Maddox and Pax's younger siblings have not cut Brad off entirely, but it seems the actor sees very little of them -- and that's just the way Angelina likes it.

“Angie secretly delights in Maddox and Pax refusing to see Brad. Besides that, she doesn’t stop them when they badmouth and complain about him,” a source close to the situation tells Radar.

“Not stopping them from blasting Brad plays into her mind games.”

Brad Pitt Says Hello

And it seems Brad has resigned himself to the fact that he'll never be able to mend fences with Maddox -- but he wants a chance to

“Brad knows his relationship with Maddox is irreparable, but he deserves a chance with the younger ones,” the insider says.

“He’s tried his best to clean up his act," the source adds.

Brad Pitt Smolders

"Brad’s sober and healthy and ready to be the best dad in the world.

"But Angelina refuses to give him a chance at redemption. It’s sad and frustrating.”

Sounds like Angelina's holding all the cards and Brad's got his work cut out for him.

But hey, at least if those George and Amal Clooney divorce rumors are true, he'll have someone to commiserate with.
